How to choose the right plants for decorating a pond on a site

The garden pond is a decorative area that will decorate any site. Its sophisticated design style and successful design will delight the eye every day. But you need to remember that natural reservoirs are very whimsical and need careful selection of plants.

Deep water

In this zone, it is better to place plants with floating or underwater leaves and shoots: water lily, lotus, white nymphea, yellow egg capsule, ranunculus inundatus, water buttercup, urut, chilim. It is preferable to plant at a depth of 20 to 50 cm, in a thick layer of organic sludge. The depth of the reservoir is not critical for them.

Shallow water

Plants with hollow or tubular stems, as well as flowering crops, such as reeds, large manna, umbelliferae, calamus, floating head, feel comfortable here. They are planted immersed in water to a depth of 0.3-0.5 m, preferably on clay, but it is also possible on sandy loam soil, permissible - in containers. The distance between them should be 50-70 cm.

Swamp

This zone starts from shallow water and ends with the edge of the coast. Due to the fact that it often dries up, a whole group of plants has been formed that can withstand such an environment. Swamp is suitable for moisture-loving herbaceous perennials: marsh marigold, willow grass, water mint, marsh milkweed and narrow-leaved cotton grass.

Coastal zone

The coastal zone is a place of permanently damp areas. Here are plants that prefer liquid mud. Not everyone can withstand such a regime, therefore, Siberian irises, monkey loosestrife, Bulley's primrose and swamp forget-me-not get along best here.

Shore

The coastal zone is already dry land. Here, the plants will not come into contact with water, so you can plant any, including garden ones. But if you want the flowers to look like marsh flowers, then it is recommended to plant a daylily, Astilba Arends, purple foxglove, meconopsis large, delphinium and Volzhanka. It is important that they tolerate the high humidity of the soil and air well.

The most popular garden flowers: photos, names, descriptions

It is difficult to imagine a gardener who does not dream that his garden plot is distinguished by originality, colorfulness and, at the same time, simplicity and unobtrusiveness. At all times, harmoniously selected garden flowers, which play an important role in landscape design, gave a special uniqueness to the garden.

Flowers will preserve the picturesqueness of the garden from early spring to late autumn, giving a unique flavor to the site and not blocking other plants.

Replacing each other with flowering, garden flowers only bring variety and revitalization to the appearance of the site, while the main tune in this orchestra still plays foliage... And the main task of the gardener is the correct placement and selection of neighbors for each plant, taking into account the requirements and conditions of their cultivation and the rules of composition.

Knowing the main plant characteristics (the period of their flowering, height, amount of greenery, breeding conditions, etc.) the gardener, like an artist-painter, draws his garden and creates a special mood in it.

When forming a flower bed, it is necessary to take into account external natural factors and choose flowers in accordance with it. So, by place of growth flowers are divided into:

  • Drought tolerant
  • Moisture-loving.

In our article we will talk about different types of flowers, as well as give examples with photos and names.

How to decorate a pond in the country or in the garden: styles and selection of plants

The design of the pond begins after the completion of construction work. In order to correctly and beautifully fit the pond into the design of the summer cottage, you need to adhere to a certain style.

There are quite a few different design options. So let's get to know some of them.

Chinese style - the emphasis is on the use of a large amount of vegetation. It has smooth transitions. In this case, the reservoir should be of impressive size. In the center of such a pond, you can install an island and plant a tree on it.

Several stones of different shapes will not interfere with it. To emphasize the Chinese theme, you can build a small stylized bridge. He will connect the shore to the island and install several lanterns on it.

Japanese style - characterized by the presence of small and dwarf plants. Between them there are beautifully laid stones and boulders, passing directly into the pond.

French style - This is the direction of the Art Nouveau style, and is the most popular. It is characterized by a large body of water, with well-defined and carefully arranged coastlines.

English style - the presence of a variety of vegetation with bright colors. It is similar to Japanese and is a kind of offshoot of it.

If you want poise and rigor, then you need a French style. If there are many different plants, then this is Japanese or English. First of all, take into account the peculiarities of the territory of the summer cottage and try at your own request.

The materials from which you are going to build your pond can be found in almost all hardware stores. This makes it possible for each person to easily equip the pond with their own hands.

Observing the technology of all stages, the reservoir will turn out to be beautiful and attractive. Options for ready-made ponds can be found and downloaded from the Internet. The size of the pond should be proportional to the size of the summer cottage.

Care should be taken to ensure that no water stagnates in the pond. This is a real engineering structure, using pumps and small streams.

Water will be transferred in a circle in the reservoir, being purified at an intermediate stage. At the same time, it will also be saturated with oxygen. It is necessary for both a variety of greenery and fish, which should definitely be launched into a pond.

The place where it is planned to locate the reservoir should be as open as possible. This will prevent it from getting dirty. But sunny places should be avoided.

The sun will help to overheat the water, and complicate the living conditions for various living organisms, including fish. To keep the structures of the plant intact, the place must be closed from the winds.

In the production of a pond, it is very high quality to perform waterproofing work. This is 90% of the success of your work.

To decorate the pond, you can use the following plants: water hyacinth and frog water paint. They do without soil and can simply float on the surface.

Hornwort and floating pondweed are specialized aquatic plants that can cleanse the pond.

In addition, aquatic plants can be planted in special containers. It can be a water lily, lotus, white flower and egg capsule. Natural stones and architectural forms will be useful on the pond.

The design of the shore of the reservoir is of great decorative importance. For these purposes, hayutunia, mannik, swamp forget-me-not, spreading hermit and others are suitable. These plants grow and thrive best in constantly moist soil.

To decorate the pond, you cannot use stones of limestone origin, since they are afraid of moisture and over time are washed out by water.

Artificial stones are quite popular. They are strong and durable. A wide variety of sculptures are used to decorate the suburban area and in particular the pond.

At the same time, it is important that they fit into the environment. Not always a lot is good. You will enjoy the results of your work if everything looks harmonious and beautiful.

How to choose the right plants for your site

With this publication, we are starting a new series of articles on the selection of plants for your site on the site.

Correct selection and planting of plants - the basis for decorating your garden. Imagine that the terrain and surroundings of your site represent some kind of external "frame". Later, this frame should be filled with plants and ornamental elements from various materials. At the same time, it is the plants that play the main role in most gardens, and therefore it depends on how successful the selection of plants is - will your garden look harmonious and natural? And most importantly, will you be comfortable and comfortable in such a garden?

Take your time with the choice of plants! ... Browse different sources of ideas and literature and gradually make a list of plants that you like. Try to immediately write them out in groups - trees, shrubs, flower plants ... Then divide each group according to their requirements for growing conditions - type of soil, light, moisture requirement, and so on. Now you have a "worklist" with which to move on.

First, notice the trees and shrubs as the "skeleton" of the garden! Take a site plan and place the selected plants on it at the required distance from each other.

Preliminary drawing all this on the plan, you can make your future garden both rational and convenient, and, of course, beautiful. Take your time, in spring you will begin to embody all your ideas, already knowing exactly what you want. And don't forget the main rule: never buy a plant just because you liked it in the store! First, be sure to mark the plantings and only then go buy plants. Of course, transplants and mistakes, most likely, cannot be avoided, but there will be many times less of them than from placing plants here and there blindly.

Once again, I want to emphasize: plants should be placed at the final stage. arrangement of the site, when the main zoning has already been carried out, the buildings are "arranged", the sites are completed paving and the main tracks. As an exception, you can plant a couple of large trees (trees) to set accents. We have already said that trees and shrubs are the "skeleton" of the garden, so you need to start with them.

Then you need to define viewpoints of compositions and engage in the selection of specific plants.

  • What should you pay attention to here?

You should not plan for a lot of woody plants - trees and shrubs are constantly growing, and you must definitely take into account that in adulthood they will need a lot of space for normal development. This especially applies to large coniferous and deciduous trees: chestnut, oak, spruce, Pine, maple. They will grow strongly in the future, and may violate the compositional integrity of your site.

Tall trees shade rather large areas, as a result, grass grows poorly under them - bald spots are formed ... Deciduous trees shed a lot of leaves in autumn, which will need to be removed. It is very difficult to collect coniferous litter, and the coniferous “pillow” formed gradually under the tree contributes to the acidity of the soil. For small plots it is better to choose undersized breeds and forms. They grow slowly, while not changing their appearance for a long time.

When choosing, give preference to plants of all-season decorativeness, with beautiful leaves, flowers, fruits and shoots. Do not limit yourself to coloring flowers only! Plants in all their glory are much more impressive than just their flowers. Pay attention to the peculiarities of the shape of each plant, the color and structure of the foliage, its color in autumn, the development of the fruits, as well as the pattern and structure of the bark.

Concerning buying plants, it is better to find out in advance in nurseries and garden centers, how accessible these or those species are. Compare prices.

Advice: Try not to be tempted to buy plants that are often sold in large stores now well before the start of the season. It is usually very difficult to keep them until planting, and then, despite your best efforts, they do not take root well and get sick.

If there is an opportunity to purchase plants in a specialized, proven nursery, then it is better to find time and go there separately (having made a list in advance) than to buy plants at the nearest store. This is especially true for seedlings of trees and shrubs, rare perennials. Perhaps at the same time, you can even reduce your costs if you make a wholesale purchase (having agreed in advance with your neighbors) or order all the plants at the same time.

And the main rule is to be able to stop in time, do not overdo it with a variety of assortments. Avoid being too colorful in a small area!

Concerning general landing pattern, start by planting the main trees and then the shrubs. Be sure to make a preliminary markup right in the garden before planting, indicating the location of the planting holes and trying to immediately imagine the overall picture "in volume".

Prepare the planting holes in advance by filling them with the required type of soil. If for some reason you cannot yet To plant trees to the final places, then you can still allocate a temporary place for them. When planning the subsequent movement of the plant, do not forget to cut the roots in a circle twice a year so that the root system is more compact, then the tree or shrub will better tolerate the transplant later. To do this, you can buy younger plants, which will allow you to save a little.

If you got old plot, you can read some tips in the article “Restoring a neglected garden».

In a separate publication, we will talk about what you need to pay attention to if you want to purchase low maintenance plants.

What frost-resistant plants will you plant on your site?

Take advantage of the useful information provided in the e-book "Frost-tolerant plants for your garden»!

More details on the choice of trees, shrubs and flowering plants will be discussed in separate publications.

Reservoir design methods

In order for the pond on the site to remain healthy and beautiful for a long time and not turn into a swamp covered with dense thickets over time, it is necessary to carefully choose the plants for it. They should grow both at the edges of the reservoir and in the water. This is also important because many summer cottages have very little area free from beds. Probably, it will not be very pleasant to see the planting of cabbage or cucumbers next to the water garden.

A standard rectangular pool or stone waterfall will not be entirely appropriate in such cases. You can build, for example, an elevated body of water with a seating area or a pond with a small waterfall on one side and dense vegetation on the other. Modern technologies make it possible to make a geyser fountain in the center of a water garden or a pond with a fluffy grass lawn on the shore.

Large reservoirs

If the site allows you to build a reservoir of a large area, then this will require you to first create a real project. It will take into account everything down to the smallest detail: materials, plant species, decorative components (for example, stone, figurines, lighting, resting places, a water pump, etc.). To design such a reservoir, you will need a maximum of creativity and imagination, because on such an area many interesting ideas can be realized. There is where to take a walk - these are the banks of the reservoir and the water surface itself.

Large reservoirs have a very important advantage over small-sized ponds - because of the great depth, the water does not bloom and remains clean for a long time. This allows you to grow a large number of aquatic plants at different depths without fear of their full development.

Along the edge of such a reservoir, you can create a natural corner of coastal shrubs and shrubs, evergreen representatives of flora, and marsh plants will perfectly take root in the water. Most often, marsh iris, lotus, snake mountaineer are used, and among tall ones - reeds, reeds, bergamo, cattail, buzulnik, pontederia and others.

Miniature bodies of water

An extraordinary water oasis can be organized even in the smallest area. For skilled hands, space is absolutely irrelevant. Even a small pond with numerous plants will always give you coolness and delight the ear with a splash of water. Representatives of the fauna - frogs, newts, dragonflies and water striders very quickly settle in miniature reservoirs.

Plants for such a water garden must be chosen taking into account how quickly they grow and how luxuriant they grow. It is very important that the pond remains a reservoir for as long as possible, and does not become a small swamp. Experienced craftsmen recommend planting more plants at the edge of the reservoir and at least on its water surface.

They feel favorable on such ponds and delight the eyes of those around them with water hyacinth, cuckoo blossom, marsh forget-me-not, irises of dwarf species, as well as higher plants - bamboo, sedge and various ornamental grasses. So that aquatic plants can be thinned out during growth, it is more convenient to plant them in small flower containers. In winter, these containers with plants can be transferred to the home.

So that the space of the pond is not overgrown with plants in a matter of days, you should not plant cattails and reeds near the reservoir, it is they who have the ability to grow rapidly.

Geometric ponds

When constructing a reservoir in the shape of a circle, a classic fountain will look good in the center. But for square or rectangular water gardens, a more austere decor will be required. Such reservoirs are often surrounded by stone walls of low height. Plants must match this style and highlight its elegance. It can be ivy, boxwood with a decorative haircut and umbrella-shaped sage, which will look great as a framing of a pond. But for decorating the water surface, lotuses and water lilies are ideal. The coast of such a reservoir can be decorated with climbing roses or other climbing plants.

Decoration of waterfalls and streams

A calm stream in the form of a leisurely water flow can be organized with your own hands without any experience. The bed of such a stream will be narrow and built of large stones or river pebbles. Since the area of the water surface is not wide, it will be enough to plant algae as aquatic plants, but along the coast of such a reservoir it is advisable to place dwarf willows or cedars, coniferous shrubs, dicenter of different shades, as well as irises.

A "mountain" waterfall is much easier to create if the land plot chosen for it is located on a slope. For the channel, it is necessary to choose stones of medium size and preferably of the same breed. They will form steps for the flow of water. To make the shores of the waterfall look festive and cheer up, you need to choose flowering plant species for planting: irises, marsh marigold, mint. It will feel good near such a reservoir of plakun-grass and umbrella susak. Swamp forget-me-not, dwarf sedge water lilies are suitable as aquatic plants.

Decoration of springs and fountains

The depth of these reservoirs is usually small, so plants for them need to be selected at different levels and no more than three copies. Plants should only be planted at the edges of the water surface or in the water. Of the tall representatives of the flora, sedge, irises and arrowhead will look more spectacular here. In the immediate vicinity of the water, you can place a saber or cattail. But on the water surface, white, pink or red nymphs, as well as a water salad, will perfectly fit. It is not worth planting plants in a spring.

Basic principles of floriculture

For beginners, it will be very useful to learn about those nuances, taking into account which you can achieve violent flowering and enjoy your flower garden:

Plentiful constant watering is not needed. The roots of all plants need not only water, but also air, so it is necessary to ensure its approach deep into the earth. If the soil is very waterlogged, then, of course, there is no air access, all the pores of the earth are clogged with moisture. From such conditions, many types of plants in flower beds simply die.

  • Compliance with winter dormancy. This means that in winter you do not need to touch the plants in the flower bed, they do not need watering or feeding.
  • Maintaining a humid atmosphere. It is imperative to monitor the humidity of the air. On particularly hot days, the plants in the flower garden require watering early in the morning and late in the evening.

Compliance with the peculiarities of growth. All plants are divided into shade-loving, light-loving and those that can exist equally well in any light. It is necessary to take this factor into account when choosing a planting site and decorating a flower garden. There are also those plants that do not like water very much, but they need moisture. This is ensured by spraying or feeding with wet peat. All of these factors can be found in the description when purchasing seeds.

Timely control of plant diseases. As soon as the first signs of a plant disease appear, you need to start fighting it, since at the first stage it is much easier to do this than later, when the disease takes on a larger scale and mows the entire flower garden.

Planting in groups. Plants of similar content are best planted in a flower garden in groups. So they will look more profitable in the flowerbed, and it will become much easier to provide them with proper care. Flowers in a group of tires look very beautiful.

Knowledge of the basics of transplanting. This is a very important point, since a few years after planting, there is a tendency for plants in the same flower garden to become not as attractive as they were before. You can solve this problem by feeding, but if this does not help much, it will be necessary to transplant the plant and it will again become just as beautiful and healthy.

Availability of garden equipment for maintenance of the flower garden. All work on the care of flowers and other plants must be carried out using special equipment and materials. Gardeners who have been doing this for more than one year probably have them, but beginners will need to buy fertilizers, special soil, a watering can, a sprayer, ropes and props, a shovel, pebbles, spoons and forks for loosening the soil near the plants (you can use old set).

  • Correct care. Each plant requires special care, so it is important to provide an individual approach to each plant in the flower garden.

  • Water

The water plot is able to diversify the design of the garden and attract attention. That is why the arrangement of a reservoir on a personal plot is now so popular.

However, young ponds, even beautifully designed ones, can look unnatural. In order to change this situation, it is enough to plant perennial plants around it. This will add integrity to the composition and create a smooth transition from the pond to the garden and home.

When choosing decorative elements and plants for a reservoir, one should be aware of what kind of impression it should create. During the warmer months, the body of water is undoubtedly the personification of freshness. This is exactly the impression that flora near the water should create. Large-leaved plants are ideal for decorating pond banks.

For the beauty of this object, it is necessary to remember the needs of the plants that will be planted near the shores of the reservoir. It is necessary to think over where and what kind of soil is located and what conditions for landscaping are.

One way or another, for a comfortable existence, about 30% of the water surface must be placed in the shade. Accordingly, some of the plants will also be in a place isolated from the sun. Therefore, it is worth considering which ones will be located exactly here.

To give integrity, you can also use another design secret: laying out stones between different types of plants. This will brighten the transition from shadow to light and create a harmonious structure for the subject.

To create the perfect garden with your own hands, it is enough to follow just a few rules:

    • consultation with specialists before direct planning of the site
    • territory zoning
    • selection of flora according to the landscape and climate.

How to decorate the shore of the pond

Do not forget that a plastic pond is just a blank for creating a reservoir. The plastic side, and possibly the bottom, needs to be decorated. Consider how this is done.

    • A rock
The most common material for finishing the line of the shore of a garden pond. It is strong and durable. Any variety can be used (granite boulders, slabs of sandstone, shale or limestone, fragments of marble) and any size from gravel to large-scale boulders.

Edging with natural stone is the most common decor option

In the design, it is better to use stones of different sizes, complementing large and medium specimens with material of a small fraction, this will give a more natural picture and it will be easier for you to hide unsightly details. If the stones are equal as to the selection, then the design will be deliberately artificial, and we have a different goal.

When choosing a stone, use the principle of uniformity. You should not mix different rocks and shapes in one composition. Let's talk about this principle in a little more detail.

If you use flat plates of natural stone (flagstone), do not add round boulders to the decoration.

    Slab means limestone

Consider the shape... For angular stones, choose crushed gravel and crushed stone as partners. The same principle works with rounded stones and rounded pebbles.

When choosing a stone, use the principle of uniformity: you chose rounded boulders, which means that rounded pebbles will be appropriate nearby, and not chipped stone screenings

Polished smooth surfaces can only be used in areas where you do not plan to walk. Remember the point about safety!

In addition to stone in its natural form, for decoration of a garden reservoir, linear products are also used, for example, special elements for sides, steps, paving stones, decorative details. Artificial stone is also suitable for decorating a pond, especially if it is used in finishing the facade of a house or a fence.

    • Concrete
Concrete is one of the options for the execution of artificial stone. This is an excellent solution for finishing the area around the pond in a modern style. But for decorating ponds that imitate natural origin, it is also well suited. Special mixtures with which you can create an imitation of almost any type of stone are called architectural (or artistic) concrete. This material allows you to create finishes right on the spot, but usually such work requires the master to possess certain skills and artistic techniques.

There is also a special concrete fabric that allows you to create an imitation of a stone of exactly the shape that is needed by design, and without the use of stonecutter's tools.

Advice: ready-made concrete cloth (which is not sold everywhere and is expensive) at home can be successfully replaced with ordinary burlap soaked in solution. The cement mortar is easily colored with pigments, and peat should be added to the mixture to create the texture of natural erosion.

    • Wood and artificial tree
Natural wood or deck boards made of composite materials are suitable for decorating the shore of the pond. However, you need to be careful with the choice of the latter: the cheapest options, unfortunately, are not of good quality and do not last long.

Raised plank decking adjacent to the bank of the artificial pond

    • Metal
Metal as a material for finishing garden ponds is not very popular: after all, the owners of suburban areas, according to observations, tend more towards traditional solutions. But if you don't mind trying something new, take a look at Corten steel - one of the latest trends in landscape design. And don't worry about the durability of the material: it does not corrode and was created for industrial building (and is also widely used in shipbuilding). Corten imitation - ordinary rusty metal - does not possess such properties.

Special Corten steel with a beautiful rusty patina can be used in the decoration of the pond

    • Vegetation
Of course, aquatic and coastal plants are an important component of design (however, the story of the art of their selection is worthy of a separate article). If you dig a plastic container not into the soil level, but a little lower (by the way, with this method it is generally easier to decorate a pond) and lay sod around the perimeter, then the water edge will take on a natural shape. The decoration can be supplemented with spectacular stones - the combination of inanimate materials with vegetation will always look the most advantageous.

    Natural pond

An interesting solution is a hedge planted along the edge of the pond. This decor works especially well for a formal garden.

Well, are you on fire with the idea of creating a pond? It's about time: almost all gardening work has already been completed, and if you buy a plastic pond now and dig it in, then by the beginning of the next season everything will settle down well, thicken, and you can safely start decorating.
