Competition "Summer Season - 2005"
Our site is located in a swampy area with a close occurrence of groundwater. In addition, the soil on it is very poor, clayey. We bought it four years ago, and since that time our family has been busy for all twelve months: we spend spring, summer and autumn fussing at the dacha, and in winter there is intensive preparation for the next season. At first it was very difficult - it was necessary to "raise" the virgin soil, build a house, set up greenhouses, but gradually, year after year, other tasks came to the fore, more ambitious plans were made.
The set of vegetable crops, fruit and berry plantings was determined as if by itself. First of all, those crops were required that the family needed: potatoes, beets, carrots, radishes, etc. But since I really love flowers, from the very beginning almost a third of the entire plot was allocated for them. I dreamed of immediately creating a real rockery, growing roses and dahlias, planting more bulbous ones, but poor soils dictated their requirements, and often they had to restrain their impulses. Time passed, and last year on our site there were already flower beds, berry and ornamental shrubs grew, bulbous crops bloomed beautifully.
From the very beginning, I conceived of creating a garden of continuous flowering, dividing the site into several zones. Therefore, in our country, strawberries are adjacent to dwarf sweet peas, and cherry plums and plums grow next to lupines.
By nature, I am an inquisitive person, and it is interesting for me to grow not only traditional crops and varieties, but also to test new products, to preserve wild-growing species. Everyone remembers that the last season was extremely unfavorable: constant rains practically reduced the harvest of potatoes, beets and carrots to nothing. But on the other hand, it was very pleasant to note the stability of strawberries and berry bushes, green crops. An excellent harvest was presented by a fig-leaved pumpkin - from three plants we collected 12 fruits, which made our family very happy, we were even able to share them with friends and members of the florist club. The blackberry looked very elegant. It was all strewn with large fragrant berries.
The greatest number of worries and worries were caused by flower crops. Our heavy soils "held" the water very stubbornly, there was no runoff, and very often, after another heavy rain, the flower beds were flooded. Sometimes the most valuable pieces of the collection had to be simply rescued. But the flowers were given away a hundredfold for taking care of them. The bloom was abundant and bright.
But our main pride has become vegetable bed... Back in winter, I drew up its project, but the protracted spring made its own adjustments. The most thermophilic crops had to be removed from the scheme. Nevertheless, the flowerbed turned out to be elegant and original. With an area of four square meters, twenty-one cultures fit perfectly on it. Since it is located in a recreation area, the requirements for the choice of crops were determined by two conditions: usefulness and decorativeness.
To create a vertical dominant in the center, I planted five tall Ipomoea plants with pink and cherry colors, making a support from slats in the form of a pyramid.
On the southern and south-western sides were planted plants of corn, decorative millet, fennel, bush fennel, tomato varieties of the House gnome, the Room pear and the Gardener's Dream. Knowing that they do not exceed 15-20 cm in height and form very compact bushes, I used them as a border, which was dressed up all season. These varieties have very beautiful dark green foliage and original small, but very tasty fruits that cover the entire bush.
On the other sides, where the sun was less, I planted several lashes of cucumbers, which grew freely and pulled themselves up to the sun on their own. Then cauliflower and ornamental cabbage, one squash, onions, garlic, Swiss chard, celery and two types of parsley were planted: leaf and curly.
To increase decorativeness in plantings of this type, in my opinion, it is more convenient to use unpretentious annuals: bush nasturtium with flowers of various colors and various varieties of calendula. Various types of lettuce served as a border for this side: Lollo Rosso, Summer golden, Red-leaved summer.
I sowed radishes as compacting crops in spring and daikon in autumn. Compacted plantings with minimal nutritional areas did not oppress the plants, because in the fall and spring a very thorough soil preparation was carried out with the introduction of a sufficient amount of fertilizers. I grew all the plants for the flower bed through seedlings in a film greenhouse. It took very little time and space, because in addition to the salad of other plants, only a few copies were required.
I must say that the flowerbed turned out to be just a feast for the eyes. She looked great from all sides, something was constantly blooming on her, and the harvest was sufficient for consumption right at the dacha by the whole family. Of course, the small size and large assortment of crops demanded constant attention, but the plants "orderlies" calendula and nasturtium made it possible to get rid of pests, and an open sunny location and a quick change of crops saved from fungal diseases. You must admit that it is very convenient to collect vegetables and pick herbs to the table right before lunch in one place, and it is much more pleasant to dine when such beauty is before your eyes.
I would also like to tell you about a wonderful plant that I grow in my garden. it fig-leaved pumpkin... I bought its seeds two years ago, and, I must admit, I didn’t count on a special harvest, because they didn’t look very attractive - they were flat, dry, brown in color, and looked very much like dry watermelon seeds. Yes, and it was hard to believe that in our conditions this plant can give full-fledged fruits not in a greenhouse, but right on the ridge in the open field.
In the first year, only one plant emerged, and we got only two small pumpkins from it. The tasting was started with caution, because they did not know what to expect. But they were pleasantly surprised - it turned out that not only the fruit itself with its mottled surface is beautiful, but also the white, juicy, rather sweet pulp is very tasty. And the smell was beyond praise - as soon as the fruit was cut, the finest melon aroma spread through the apartment. Of course, cooking porridge from such fruits is probably not worth it, but on the other hand, this pumpkin is indispensable in the composition of fruit and vegetable salads.
Last season, I planted three plants from the collected seeds of my own, and in different ways: one was grown through seedlings in a glass in a film greenhouse, and the other two were planted with seeds directly in the ridge prepared in autumn under the covering material and film arcs. And she concluded that plants that immediately grow in a constant place are in no way inferior in growth strength and the time of entry into fruiting of greenhouse specimens. In my opinion, they are even more vigorous and come into fruiting a little earlier.
The care was the same as for all pumpkin crops, but the yield varied sharply. If ordinary types of pumpkins, due to heavy rains, entered fruiting later than usual, and the fruits did not have time to develop to normal sizes, then the fig-leaved pumpkin felt great. Its fruits did not rot, the set rate was very high, and it was even necessary to carry out rationing of the fruits. Their keeping quality was also very good. They were kept indoors until spring. It turned out that the fruits of this type of pumpkin are characterized by increased resistance to low temperatures compared to common types of pumpkins. It so happened that several small pumpkins came under the September frosts, but they survived them perfectly, and this did not affect their keeping quality.
I want to offer all gardeners fruit and vegetable salad recipe, which is very much loved in our family. It will require: a slice of pumpkin, one apple, one pear, one kiwi, you can add grapes or grated carrots, lemon or orange juice. The pulp of pumpkin and carrots should be grated on a coarse grater or cut into small cubes. Cut the apple, pear, kiwi and grapes into cubes, then mix everything, sprinkle with lemon or orange juice, add sugar to taste. You can fill the salad with yogurt or sour cream, or you can use it without dressing.

An ordinary reservoir will look more beautiful and attractive if you make a fountain or waterfall out of it. There will be no special problems with the arrangement if there is a water supply system on the site. This will give the opportunity to widely unfold creative imagination and imagination. For example, you can build a whole water composition using several fountain nozzles. You can make the trickles flow right out of the water.
The reservoir will become even more interesting and original if you supplement it with floating or underwater lamps with multi-colored bulbs. Such lighting in the evening will turn an ordinary pond into an exclusive structure. Illumination can be carried out not only with the help of ordinary bulbs and flashlights, but also with the use of other improvised household items and figures.
The country-style garden has a rustic charm, it is a nostalgic peasant garden. His main motto is naturalness and ease. Gardens in this style are common throughout the world and in each country the rural garden has its own flavor. Country music is characterized by some carelessness, cheerfulness, a motley mixture of bright colors. This is a garden where many things grow and many accessories are present. But the negligence here is actually very thoughtful. A country garden does not require complex maintenance and can be arranged on a plot of any size, but the optimal one is from 6 to 12 acres. There are no special requirements for the shape and location of the site, but it is desirable that it is not in the forest.
Key elements of landscape design:
There are no lawns.
The flower beds are varied and lush.
A small pond in a natural style.
Paths made of grass, bark, gravel or saw cuts.
Curbs along the paths.
The main material is wood.
Vertical gardening using the simplest and most unpretentious plants.
Vegetables among flowers.
Abundant vegetable garden.
Features of the layout:
There is no symmetry, strict shapes, perfect paths, pastel colors.
The tracks are very simple, not straight - with smooth curves.
Flowers are planted with an arbitrary mixture.
Any bright colors, the more the better.
Trees: fruit crops.
Shrubs: lilac, mock orange, honeysuckle, rose hips.
Perennials and flowers: vegetables and fruit crops, sunflowers, mallow, delphinium, hydrangea, phlox, various "daisies", kosmeya, marigolds, snapdragons, calendula, salvia, bells, geranium, cuff, annual asters, flax, fragrant tobacco, petunia , lupines, lavater, decorative bows. For flower borders, pansies or ageratum are suitable. For vertical gardening, the best are sweet peas, morning glory, hops, fire beans, pumpkin - decorative or ordinary.
Small architectural forms:
Wooden fence or wattle.
Wooden trellises for plants.
The shops are of traditional simple form.
Wells with a "house" roof.
Rustic pergolas and awnings.
Baskets and other items from the vine.
Ladders - you can fix flower pots or strawberry boxes on them.
Simple ceramic pots.
Wooden birdhouses and bird feeders.
Tin plates with plant names.
Garden figurines: primarily images of rural animals, such as chickens, geese, goats, cats. But not plastic figures or gnomes.
If you still want to make a small lawn, then either leave it natural (ordinary grass, only mowed), or make Moorish (forbs interspersed with annual flowers), or clover.
A small amount of weeds is even welcome here: wild plantains, bells, dandelions, buttercups will give a natural charm in a rural spirit.
If a path made of wood cuts is arranged in a shady place on the site, it is a good idea to duplicate it on top with a metal mesh to avoid slipping.
In this style, you can not be afraid to overdo it with accessories.
In a country garden, it is good to arrange a whole vegetable bed - for example, from different types of salads.
In this style, like nowhere else, there is a use for old household things: wheelbarrows, buckets, watering cans, troughs, basins, even ancient irons, cart wheels (in such a wheel you can arrange a flower garden or a bed of spices).
Try planting colorful bitter peppers in containers and among flowers. It will turn out very impressive.
The beginning of everything is a clear plan so that trees will not shade the house and will not end up in an area unsuitable for fruit plants, for example, in the shade of buildings or under wires. The high points of the site are a suitable place for berry bushes. The tallest trees should be planted in the lowest part of it. There should be no fruit crops near greenhouses and foundations. This damages the root system and can cause glass burns to the trunks. Trees and shrubs are planted at the following distance from each other:
Experts advise taking into account the climate in general and the microclimate in particular: plants cannot be well in unsuitable conditions. So, in Siberia, unlike the southern strip, gardens take root only in favorable microzones - on the southern slopes of the hills protected from the winds.
Gardeners want to grow beautiful flowers. To keep a rare plant on your windowsill, you should follow the breeding secrets. A rare plant requires a special approach. The subtleties of the content of large classes of colors are different. In this article, the editors have tried to cite several articles in order to avoid disappointment when keeping an unusual plant. It should be understood for the correct procedures to which class the purchased plant is defined.
Vegetable beds, flower beds, flower beds. Edible flowers and plants. An amazing way to save vegetables from pests and flu diseases. Creation of universal vegetable flower beds or several beds, mixing different crops, vegetables, salads, flowers and decorative deciduous plants on them. It is possible to form such beds according to the principle of usefulness, planting cultivated flowers next to vegetables that can be useful. Such flowers will not only protect capricious vegetables from pests, but also decorate our beds.
There are flowers that are able not only to drive away pests but also have medicinal properties. In addition, many of them can be eaten by adding to salads. Such vegetable flower gardens are very attractive and help to significantly save space, effort and money.
Marigolds and calendula (marigolds) are used against pests. They can be planted near vegetable beds, or in the fall, before digging up the site, crushed stems and flowers of calendula (marigolds), marigolds are scattered throughout the site. These plants, embedded in the soil, cleanse it of malicious pests and influenza diseases. In autumn, the stems and flowers of these plants are cut, finely chopped and sprinkled with this green mass on the site. In this way, sufficiently large areas of the garden can be rehabilitated annually.
Marigolds growing near cucumber beds restrain the appearance of many pests, including aphids. Calendula can be sown in any garden bed. It has a positive effect on the soil, is able to drive away pests, and has medicinal properties. In addition, calendula can be eaten by adding it to salads.
Plants such as tansy, wormwood, lavender, yarrow, chamomile are also excellent green protectors. Zinnias and marigolds can be placed in the tomato garden. An exuberant climbing cacophony can be placed next to cucumbers and pumpkin.
Borage is not only a wonderful baking powder and honey plant, but also an excellent medicinal and spice plant that can even replace a cucumber in a salad. No wonder borage is called a cucumber herb. Borage will relieve vegetables from stagnant water and attract pollinating brethren.
Sunflower and nasturtium are beneficial. The qualities of sunflower are known to every gardener. Nasturtium is perceived exclusively as an ornamental plant, without even knowing about its true value. Nasturtium is an edible plant. Its finely chopped leaves and flowers are scented with cottage cheese and butter. Nasturtium is also added to salads. Nasturtium salad with sweet pepper is unusually healthy and tasty. This compact plant can be used to fill aisles or empty spaces in vegetable crops. Nasturtium will get rid of weeds and will decorate the garden until frost.
Other flowers are also useful and beautiful - chrysanthemum, fragrant pelargonium, clary sage, cuff, mallow. The flowers of these plants are edible and are especially good in salads. Chisel, licorice and mullein have valuable medicinal properties.
You can also decorate your site with ornamental vegetables. For example, a bright orange mini pumpkin. Leafy salads, which are now in great abundance, are ideal for these purposes. Or you can add a Japanese vegetable chrysanthemum, which forms yellow chamomile flowers, to a garden with salads, place irises nearby and then you get not just a garden with greens, but an exquisite corner in Japanese style.
When planning, it is necessary to take into account the growing conditions, location requirements, individual characteristics of the plants. It is best not to use tall giants with strong root systems or overly aggressive, fast-growing carpet plants. And it is better to refuse some of them because of possible harm, for example, slugs can attack the delphinium, and this is bad for vegetables.
On the garden plot, you can beautifully arrange not only flower beds, but also vegetable beds. Beautiful, and most importantly, delicious!
Any leafy crops, spicy herbs, ornamental types of cabbage are planted on such beds. Vegetable beds differ from ordinary beds in the intricacy of shapes and colors.
Quite fashionable and interesting at the present time are the tendencies of combining a vegetable garden and a garden into one decorative composition. And this is quite relevant, especially for owners of small plots. when, on the one hand, you want to have a beautiful blooming garden, but on the other hand, you still want to use the site for growing various vegetables and herbs in order to save the family budget, or to be sure of the environmental friendliness of the food you eat. Well, there is a way out! We create a decorative vegetable garden. Let the vegetables grow in the flower beds! Moreover, these can be separate vegetable beds, or there can be compositions of vegetables and flowers! Of course, roses framed with beets look at least strange, but vegetables coexist quite well with other, not so capricious flowers. The foliage of many vegetable crops is very decorative and beautiful. In addition, it has been found that planting garden crops in flower beds helps control pests.
Let us also dream up and think about how garden plants can be useful to us in decorating our garden.
Salad - quite often used to decorate borders and flower beds. There are many varieties of lettuce that are very beautiful and indispensable in our decorative garden. Purchase seeds of several varieties with contrasting colors and various shapes, with their help, turning on your imagination, you can get a real "artistic canvas".
Carrot. Unless its carved graceful foliage of a delicate green color can decorate our garden, so why plant it in dull beds. Make a flower bed of a round or other unusual shape, plant bright, for example orange or blue, flowers in the center, they will be perfectly set off by carrots planted in several rows.
Beets - its large leaves with raspberry veins are quite capable of decorating a flower bed. You can plant it in small groups or along the edge.
Cabbage . Well, about the ornamental varieties of cabbage. probably, there is nothing to say, they will look great in the garden along with the most exquisite flowers, maybe not everyone knows, but this beauty is also quite edible. Although common cabbage or cauliflower can be good, for example, among marigolds and marigolds. In addition, cabbage will decorate your ornamental garden until the very frosts, and even after them, since it is very frost-hardy.
Garlic, onion, dill, parsley are quite suitable for flower beds as decorative greenery. You can plant them in small groups among flowering plants. True, these cultures should be monitored so that they retain their decorative effect, or, having lost it, do not spoil the general appearance of the flower bed.
Basil is a spicy plant that can be green or purple in color, perfect for a vegetable flower bed.
Zucchini. Their large carved leaves, large yellow flowers, and even fruits are perfect for an ornamental garden. It is quite possible to place them in the center of the composition. The varieties "Aeronaft" or "Festivalny" are especially decorative.
Pumpkins are undoubtedly a garden decoration. With the help of long sprawling shoots and decorative fruits, you can, for example, decorate the compost heap. Pumpkins are good in vertical gardening.
Tomatoes. Low-growing varieties of tomatoes are also suitable for garden decoration, varieties with small fruits will be especially good.
Cucumbers. although it can be used in vertical gardening, but in our conditions, it would still be better to leave them in a greenhouse or greenhouse.
Strawberries and strawberries. The beauty of this berry allows it to be widely used in garden design. The best varieties of strawberries can be used to decorate flower beds, flower beds, borders, as well as for planting in containers and hanging baskets. The main thing here is to choose the right varieties.
Sunflower. no doubt, he will decorate any garden with his large flowers, suns, and will be able to become a soloist of any garden composition.
Corn - will also be good in decorating the garden, as a tall plant is suitable for group plantings in the center of the composition.
Peas - suitable for vertical gardening of the site. Pea pods hanging from hanging containers will look interesting.
Beans. Ornamental bean varieties are a wonderful annual liana. The most beautiful fiery red beans are about 3 meters long.
nasturtium (maybe not everyone knows, but its flowers and leaves are used in salads, and green seeds are pickled as capers), sunflower. sage. oregano or lavender.
Most importantly, forget about the correct rectangular beds and come up with an interesting ornament for your decorative garden. First, you can draw it on paper. For example, it can be a round flowerbed, divided into sectors by paths, but in general, turn on your imagination and imagination. And don't forget about the containers. They can also be used to plant not only decorative flowers. Place a container with different herbs and salad in the utility area, or in the area where you usually get together on summer evenings, and you will have everything you need at hand.

about sunflowers - there are decorative varieties - they are fluffy, they are usually not very tall, but you probably won't get seeds from them
you can use different cabbages and salads, this season I saw in stores red-headed Brussels sprouts, so to speak, the "pomegranate" variety, you can shove them in the center - they are tall, the leaves will be saturated red, and dry late - they will not interfere with the harvest directly. and lettuce - the same "lolo dew) can be put on the edge
you can take sweet peppers to eat undersized, but with rather large fruits - at the same time it will be possible to do without a support and a garter - the rest of the plants will hold the bush in the wind
there are also wild hot peppers, with small fruits, including fruits that change color depending on the degree of maturity (if memory does not change "aladdin" like that) - they can be brought to the periphery, it will probably be something like if strawberry bushes with berries occasionally.
by the way, strawberries - also, why not, especially if there is some kind of pedestal, or for example a stump inscribed in the overall picture
about cabbages - there are ornamental cabbages, I saw (though only in the photo) whole beds of cabbages alone, it looks like it's strewn with giant roses)))
you can plant onions and garlic - of course, flowers are not for everybody's taste, and the nutrients from the bulb are distracted by seeds, but as an option.
I really doubt about tomatoes. their fruits are certainly very diverse. but those varieties that are undersized (that is, they are more or less resistant to wind, and do not require support), they tend to give off the crop very quickly, a week or two, and then, in general, just a green bush, with not very attractive foliage (well , it seems to me at least that the glossy leaves of the pepper look better). and tall ones require a garter, or some other support, but they also bear fruit longer (and depending on what kind of weather you have, there won't be any sense from this, for example, in the open ground, for example, a fog appears quite early on, which quickly nails the whole thing)
by the way, you can play with eggplants - they now also come in very interesting colors, and their bush is more or less durable
you can also use physalis - you can also use it as decorative or as food. orange color is not that common
Speaking of cabbages, there is also a sort of "kalibios" - red cabbage, with an unusual head shape - such a conical one, it looks like a drop. I think you can completely beat this case
you can also remember millet and sorghum (brooms are made of them). if it is somewhere on the edge of the garden, you can make a good wall, you can also use corn here
in! remembered! again cabbage)) - cauliflower - firstly, it is both white and purple (like "purple ball" is called) and secondly - there are very early ripening varieties and you can get it on your table early. one but. -It is necessary that the heads of cabbage are in some shade, otherwise the heads of cabbage will burn out. for this purpose there are "self-covering" varieties (they cover the swing with their leaves - they eliminate the possibility of a burn) - they have large leaves that bind the swing - in our case this is not desirable, but if the swing is not in the direct sun - then the leaves are also possible will cut off, in my garden this "purple ball" looked just gorgeous! I couldn’t stop looking at them))
